Reminders for Class #4

Announcement: By popular demand, this blog is now for the Wednesday section only! The Monday section's blog has been moved here.

Reminder: Our 9/28 meeting will be in the Johnson Library, room 228.

Reading: Booth chapter 5, and anything from the previous weeks you're still catching up on. I told you it would slow down!

Writing:

-Share (or email) first draft of Project Description by Monday the 26th at 8:00 p.m. There are some guidelines in the handout I gave you a couple of weeks ago with the title "Drafting a Research Proposal." Also, be sure to get this to your faculty mentor somehow, and then get me the comments when he/she finishes them. Again this would all be easier in Google Docs, but email is fine if needed.
-Sample project descriptions here.
-Whether or not you are successful with Google Docs yet, it is important that you be able to call up your project description from one of the library computers during our session there.

-Create a concept map of your topic, also for use in the library session. So make sure to bring a physical copy of that. As I explained this afternoon, a concept map could be many different things, so don't take "map" too literally. Just any way you can organize the various concepts or questions of your paper without writing in sequential complete sentences. Here is a copy of the related handout.
-As a separate exercise, or perhaps as sort of the "legend" scribbled in the corner of your concept map, I highly recommend that you try your best to complete the following template: I am investigating ___________ because ___________ , in order to ___________. ___________has/have generally approached the topic by ___________, while ___________ believe/s that ___________; I will be arguing instead that ___________.

-Research Log #3 will be a follow up to the library session, and should be posted within 24 hours afterwards. (That makes Thursday the 29th at 7:30 p.m.)

    25 questions:

I wrote my Statement of Interest about a research project that may be too difficult to carry out due to time considerations (I wanted to start with expectant parents early in the pregnancy and do an outcome measure at six weeks postpartum – a six or seven month time frame!) I am trying to determine whether I should switch to one of my alternative plans, a study that focuses on parents who have made the choice to leave the workforce in order to care for their new baby. These parents would participate in a six-week discussion group, their well-being would be compared to parents who do not participate in the discussion group. I’m calling that study Project B and some of the following questions apply only to that project.

    1. About the timeframe of my possible research studies: Could I do the intervention, conduct the measures, analyze the data and have time to prepare a presentation of results, all in one semester?
    2. Will I be able to design a study that can gain approval from the Human Subjects Review Board?
    3. Will all intervention materials have to be approved (and if so, by whom)?
    4. Will HSRB allow a parent discussion board? Will they require a moderator (and if so, what qualifications will that person be required to hold?)
    5. There are active research projects conducted by GMU researchers collaborating with Inova Health System - might it be possible for me to do a study in partnership with Inova (thinking of project B). Investigate by contacting the GMU faculty member who spoke about this at the meeting of the Study Group on Behavioral and Health Interventions (9-12-11).
    6. If collaboration with Inova seems possible, do they have existing support groups for at-home parents? (thinking of project B).
    7. Might Inova be interested in testing online information and support materials for parents?
    8. How many study participants will I need?
    9. How will I recruit participants?
    10. Are there any opportunities to apply for funding for this study, to cover cost of visual design services, intervention materials, evaluation measures and modest thank you gifts for study participants?
    11. Will the control team “do” anything other than take part in the final evaluations?
    12. What outcome measures will I use?
    13. Will I also be collecting data on individual participants’ use of the intervention (i.e. time spent with intervention materials)?
    14. Are there appropriate and free outcome measures?
    15. What outcome measures have been used in Oklahoma’s Family Expectations program? (Devaney & Dion, 2010).
    16. Is it possible to review the content of intervention materials used in the Oklahoma Family Expectations Program?
    17. How will I analyze the data from the outcome measures?
    18. Might it be possible to use software developed by GMU’s Center for Social Complexity to analyze my data?
    19. How much time will analyzing the data require?
    20. Will I be able to include a ‘policy’ component in this study? Perhaps a survey of parents’ knowledge and attitudes pre and post intervention?
    21. Will I collect quantitative data? Parents’ comments about the intervention?
    22. Is the Northwest Institute Discussion Guide (recommended by Annette Mills) available and useful? (thinking of Project B)
    23. Perhaps there is something useful in the “change process” literature? (see Helman et al. – The Change Handbook – online resource, referenced in a draft of my Spring 2011 paper – dropped from final paper)
    24. Examining the intervention materials from the perspective of positive psychology, do the materials address each of the five measurable elements of wellbeing (positive emotion, engagement, relationships, meaning and purpose, and accomplishment)?
    25. Do the intervention materials include elements of play and music?
